Navy veteran lands the position he was “hoping to get” through DAV/Veteran Recruiting Virtual Career Fair
During his 15.5 years of sea duty, Navy veteran Louis Johnson served eight deployments that were six months or longer and served on six different ships.
“I was a professional sailor, which encompassed a myriad of different things,” says Louis. “I loved what I did, and when I was older I loved watching the young sailors learn their profession.”
After his naval career, Louis was ready for his next professional chapter. Thanks to a DAV/Veteran Recruiting Virtual Career Fair, he found the perfect fit.
“I left the Navy a Senior Supervisor, and I fit into my new position in Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI) like the last piece of a puzzle - perfect,” he says.
For Louis, who had never given much consideration to the idea of a virtual career fair, the DAV/Veteran Recruiting Virtual Career Fair wound up being the very thing that placed him in contact with the recruiters that wound up hiring him.
“It was more effective than headhunter groups that had tried to place me into positions that weren’t really what I was looking for,” says Louis. “The DAV/Veteran Recruiting Virtual Career Fair was truly effective and I highly recommend any transitioning service member look into which companies participate in it, and if they feel qualified, to submit a professionally reviewed resume and cover letter during the company’s virtual career fair day.”
Today, Louis is part of an outstanding company that is truly veteran friendly.
“Johnson Controls not only says it is veteran friendly, we have an active veterans group within the organization that participates in fundraising events that support various veteran’s organizations as well as spend time getting to know the people in JCI that are veterans and share stories. It’s a very active group.”
Louis was hired for the very position he had hoped for and is enjoying great benefits and a competitive wage, all of which he greatly appreciates. He encourages other veterans that they can do the same through DAV/Veteran Recruiting Virtual Career Fairs.
“Don’t give up,” he says. “And thank you DAV and VRC for your help in my post military career as well as getting the word out to others!”
